What Happened to Goodbye by Sarah Dessen
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
When I started reading this book, I was a little biased. I thought it would be just like any other contemporary YA novel - flat and cliched. Truth is, it was amazing. It wasn't a fast pace book. It wasn't girl-meets-guy-and-falls-in-love kind of thing. It had real relationships, real developments, real and important concepts. It dealt with trauma and love and teen problems. The characters were strong and really well developed. Every single one of them was unique and perfect in their own way.
It was quality writing worth reading not only by young adults, but by adults as well. The author poses problems of (sadly) everyday life - like divorce - and the impact they have on everyone involved, especially children.
The novel had just enough back story to not keep us readers wondering what was happening and why. Everything was done in just the right amount.
I would recommend it as a must-read.
Two thumbs up!

As a Sarah Dessen fan, I figured her most recent novel would stand up to those written previously, I was sadly mistaken, however. It's not that "What Happened to Goodbye" is bad, it's just not great either. I found myself bored about half way through and completely shocked at how predictably the events unfolded. I knew how it was going to end at half way. I wouldn't recommend to anyone who is looking for something other than a cheesy love/coming of age/identity crisis story of a young girl in modern day America.
ReplyDeleteIt's sad that you didn't like it. I have very nice memories of this book. But I respect your opinion :)
